About This Anchorage
Nida is the crown jewel of the Lithuanian Curonian Spit — a beautifully preserved fishing village and resort town set among the most dramatic dune landscape in the eastern Baltic. The Great Dune (Parnidžio Kopa), reaching 52m high, towers above the village and is one of the most visited natural landmarks in Lithuania. Nida's wooden fishermen's cottages, painted in traditional blue, brown, and red, line the lagoon shore, and the small harbour welcomes visiting sailors to this UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Nobel laureate Thomas Mann spent four summers here in the 1930s at his wooden summer house, now a museum. The anchorage in Nida Bay is in very shallow water — the Curonian Lagoon averages only 3.8m throughout — but the sand bottom gives reliable holding and the spit provides excellent shelter from westerly winds. The Kaliningrad border (Russia) lies only 10km to the south, and vessels must not approach the border zone. Nida is the southernmost permitted anchorage on the Lithuanian spit.
