Anchorages in Klaipėda & Curonian Lagoon
Curonian Lagoon — three critical warnings for visiting sailors
Depth: The Curonian Lagoon averages just 3.8m throughout — monitor your depth sounder at all times and approach all anchorages cautiously. Kaliningrad border: The southern lagoon borders Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. Stay north of Nida — the border is 10km south of the village. Do not proceed south of Nida under any circumstances. Klaipėda Strait traffic: The only entrance to the lagoon carries heavy commercial and ferry traffic — DFDS ferries to Kiel and Stena Line to Karlshamn pass through daily. Call Klaipėda Port Control on VHF Ch 09 before approaching. Speed limit 8 knots in the strait and lagoon — strictly enforced by LTSA patrol vessels.
