About This Anchorage

Karkle is a small coastal village on the Lithuanian Baltic shore, 10 nautical miles north of Klaipėda, famed among Lithuanians as one of the country's best amber beaches. The village sits on a low coastal bluff above a long white sand beach where the Baltic surf regularly deposits fragments of Baltic amber — fossilised pine resin millions of years old — after storms. The anchorage is in 3–8m over sandy bottom with reliable holding, but the open western exposure means this is strictly a fair-weather anchorage or a brief stop in settled conditions. The coast here has a wild, unspoiled quality — the Lithuanian coastal strip north of Klaipėda is largely undeveloped, with forested dunes and empty beaches. A small fishing community remains active, and the beach is popular with Lithuanian amber hunters and summer visitors. The anchorage is best used as a lunch stop or brief overnight in settled easterly conditions during a coastal passage between Klaipėda and Palanga. After any westerly storm, the beach is worth walking for amber fragments.
