About This Anchorage
Palanga is Lithuania's premier beach resort, the country's 'summer capital' where a quarter of a million visitors pour through in July and August to enjoy the famous 3km white sand beach. The town is known for its amber heritage — the Palanga Amber Museum in a 19th-century botanical park houses one of the world's largest amber collections, including extraordinary pieces with prehistoric insects trapped inside. The iconic wooden pier, at 1,168 metres the longest on the Baltic coast, extends far out to sea and gives Palanga its most recognisable image. The roadstead anchorage off the beach is in 4–10m on fine Baltic sand, suitable only in settled conditions given the fully exposed western aspect. The approach is straightforward in good visibility, keeping clear of the pier and the beach swimming areas marked with buoys in summer. For visiting sailors, this is a spectacular day anchorage in calm conditions — a front-row seat to Lithuania's beach culture at its most exuberant. The town's restaurants, amber shops, and lively pedestrian promenade are easily reached by dinghy landing on the beach.
