About This Anchorage

Šventoji Outer Bay is the coastal anchorage off Lithuania's northernmost resort town, a natural stopping point for sailors making coastal passages along the short Lithuanian Baltic coast or transitioning between Lithuania and Latvia's Gulf of Riga. The town of Šventoji (population around 500) sits at the mouth of the Šventoji River and has a small but functional harbour with a breakwater, restaurant, and basic facilities. The outer bay anchorage in 3–8m on sand is exposed to the open western Baltic but gives a useful overnight option in settled conditions, particularly when the harbour is full or too shallow for the vessel's draft. The Latvian border lies barely 1.5km to the north — a significant geopolitical marker on this short coast — and sailors crossing into Latvian waters should ensure they have appropriate documentation. The beach is a popular summer destination with a quieter character than the more developed Palanga 7nm to the south. Amber collecting on the beach after westerly storms is a local pastime, and the fish market near the harbour sells local catches.
