About This Anchorage

Giruliai is an extraordinary place on the Lithuanian Baltic coast — not a town but a vast natural pine forest resort where Soviet-era sanatoriums and modern holiday centres nestle between ancient trees stretching down to a pristine white sand beach. The forest-to-beach transition here is abrupt and beautiful, the dense pines giving way directly to fine Baltic sand and the open sea. Visitors come to Giruliai for the combination of forest bathing and Baltic swimming — the resort has been a recuperation destination since the 19th century. The coastal anchorage in 4–9m on sand is suitable only in settled conditions, with no shelter from westerly or northerly Baltic swell. The beach here is quieter than Palanga's crowded shores, giving a more contemplative feel to a day anchorage. Landing by dinghy on the sand beach is straightforward in calm weather, and the forest paths make for excellent walking. There are no commercial facilities directly on the beach, but the resort centres within the forest have restaurants and basic provisions.
