About This Anchorage
Ventė Cape (Ventės Ragas) is one of Europe's most celebrated ornithological sites and one of the most memorable anchorages in the Curonian Lagoon. A prominent peninsula projecting into the southeastern lagoon from the mainland shore, the cape acts as a natural funnel for migratory birds — up to 30,000 birds per day pass through during autumn migration, and the ornithological ringing station here, established in 1929, is one of the oldest continuously operating bird observatories in Europe. Anchoring off the cape in 2–4m over excellent mud and clay holding, sailors arrive in a remarkable natural setting of pine woods, reed beds, and the lagoon's extraordinary birdlife. The old lighthouse on the cape dates to 1863 and is still active as a navigational mark. In autumn (August–October), the cape becomes alive with raptors, cranes, geese, and songbirds on the Curonian Spit flyway. The anchorage is exposed to easterly winds across the full lagoon width, but in settled summer westerlies it is a calm and magical overnight spot. A small nature centre and café near the lighthouse serves visitors in summer.
