Historic Dockyard Creek (and adjacent French Creek) between the promontories of Vittoriosa (Birgu) and Senglea in the Grand Harbour — completely enclosed by 16th-century fortifications on both sides. 4–8m over excellent mud with very good holding throughout. The Grand Harbour fortification mass provides absolute all-round protection — this is one of the best-sheltered anchorages in the entire Mediterranean. Notify Transport Malta on VHF Ch 16 on arrival. Some commercial boat activity (heritage vessels, government launches, AFM patrol boats) uses the creek approaches — anchor well into the creek away from the commercial approaches. The historic boatyard at Vittoriosa is immediately adjacent; the dghajsa (traditional gondola-like water taxi) service to Valletta departs from the Vittoriosa quay. Mediterranean tidal range <30cm: no tidal corrections needed. 80m alarm radius appropriate for the enclosed creek in 5–7m mud.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Dockyard Creek is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival. Provide vessel name, call sign, ETA, and last port of call. Follow VTS berth instructions.
- Anchor in 4–8m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal correction needed, but wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m is possible in strong winds.
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (40m chain at 8m depth) on a mud or sand bottom for maximum holding.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Dockyard Creek are excellent — the enclosed harbour provides all-round protection from sea and swell. The primary overnight hazard in the Grand Harbour area is the Gregale NE gale (Nov–Mar): if a Gregale develops, move to Kalkara Creek or Dockyard Creek for complete shelter, or run south to Marsaxlokk Bay.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below. 80m radius in 5–7m mud. Dockyard Creek is enclosed between the Vittoriosa and Senglea fortification promontories — outstanding all-round protection. Mediterranean tidal range <30cm. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial vessel movements in the Grand Harbour.
Open year-round — complete all-round protection makes Dockyard Creek viable in every season including severe winter weather. The Grand Harbour is Malta's principal Gregale refuge. The Three Cities are at their most atmospheric outside of peak tourist season (October–April): fewer crowds, quieter restaurants, and the full weight of the fortified history is more palpable. Summer (June–September) brings cruise ship activity to the main harbour but the creek anchorage itself remains quiet. The view of the Grand Harbour entrance at sunset, with the fortifications glowing gold, is unforgettable.
Navigation Hazards
- Grand Harbour commercial shipping — cruise ships, cargo vessels, and Gozo Channel ferries use the main harbour channel; stay well clear; monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously
- Heritage vessel and AFM patrol boat activity in Dockyard Creek — anchor well into the creek away from the approaches; maintain watch
- Night navigation: Grand Harbour is busy with commercial traffic; enter in daylight on first visit; use leading lights and chart plotter carefully
- Notify VTS on arrival: Grand Harbour is a controlled port — Transport Malta VHF Ch 16 must be contacted
Rules & Regulations
- EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: clear customs at Grand Harbour (24/7) or Mġarr Gozo (24/7). Fly yellow Q flag. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.

- Anchoring fee: Free — Grand Harbour creek anchorage; notify Transport Malta VHF Ch 16 on arrival
- Restrictions: Notify Transport Malta (VHF Ch 16) on arrival — Grand Harbour is a controlled port. Anchor well clear of commercial boat activity in the creek approaches. Sleep peacefully at Dockyard Creek
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously — essential at Grand Harbour where Gregale swell can develop rapidly in Marsamxett and commercial vessel wash can disturb anchorages with little warning.
