Kalkara Creek Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Kalkara anchorage, Grand Harbour Kalkara, Rinella Creek
Kalkara Creek — the quietest and most peaceful of the Grand Harbour creeks, on the south side of the harbour between Vittoriosa and the Rinella promontory. Fully enclosed by the surrounding fortification mass: excellent all-round protection from every wind direction including Gregale. Mud bottom, 3–7m, good holding throughout. The creek is off the main commercial channel and away from cruise ship traffic. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa/Birgu) are a short walk along the shoreline. Notify Transport Malta (VHF Ch 16) on arrival — the Grand Harbour is a controlled port. A superb, rarely visited overnight anchorage.

Enclosed creek on the south side of the Grand Harbour — completely sheltered in all directions by the surrounding Grand Harbour fortification mass. 3–7m over excellent mud with good holding throughout. Kalkara Creek is the quietest and most seldom-visited of the Grand Harbour creeks, off the main commercial channel and away from the principal tourist areas. Notify Transport Malta on VHF Ch 16 on arrival — mandatory for all vessels entering the Grand Harbour. Check for commercial vessel and dghajsa (traditional water taxi) traffic in the main harbour before entering the creek. The Malta Coast Guard (AFM Maritime Squadron) base is nearby — maintain correct lights and signals. Mediterranean tidal range <30cm: no tidal corrections needed. 75m alarm radius appropriate for the enclosed creek geometry and full scope in 5–6m mud.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Kalkara Creek is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival. Provide vessel name, call sign, ETA, and last port of call. Follow VTS berth instructions.
- Anchor in 3–7m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal correction needed, but wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m is possible in strong winds.
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (35m chain at 7m depth) on a mud or sand bottom for maximum holding.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Kalkara Creek are excellent — the enclosed harbour provides all-round protection from sea and swell. The primary overnight hazard in the Grand Harbour area is the Gregale NE gale (Nov–Mar): if a Gregale develops, move to Kalkara Creek or Dockyard Creek for complete shelter, or run south to Marsaxlokk Bay.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 75m radius before going below. 75m radius in 5–6m mud. Kalkara Creek is fully enclosed by the Grand Harbour fortification mass — excellent all-round protection. Mediterranean tidal range <30cm. Notify VTS on arrival.
Open year-round — the Grand Harbour's exceptional all-round protection makes Kalkara Creek a viable anchorage in every season including the Gregale winter months. It is one of the very few anchorages in Malta that is genuinely safe and comfortable in a Gregale gale. Summer brings increased commercial port activity in the main harbour, but the creek itself remains quiet. The Three Cities are least crowded October–April — the atmosphere of the 16th-century fortifications and the dghajsa water taxis is most authentic out of peak season.
Navigation Hazards
- Grand Harbour commercial traffic — cruise ships, cargo vessels, Gozo Channel ferries use the main harbour; stay well clear of the main channel; monitor VHF Ch 16
- AFM Maritime Squadron (Malta Coast Guard) base nearby — maintain correct lights and signals at all times; obey all instructions from the AFM
- Dghajsa (water taxis) and small ferry traffic in the harbour approach — watch for fast-moving small craft
- Port Entry notification: non-EU crew/vessels must clear customs at Grand Harbour (24/7) — the Port of Entry is directly accessible from this anchorage

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Kalkara Creek
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously — essential at Grand Harbour where Gregale swell can develop rapidly in Marsamxett and commercial vessel wash can disturb anchorages with little warning.
