Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) Anchorage Guide
Also known as: RMYC Marina, Marsamxett Marina, Ta' Xbiex Marina
The Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) at Ta' Xbiex — Malta's premier yacht club, on the south shore of Marsamxett Harbour directly opposite Valletta's fortifications. Pontoon and stern-to berths in 3–6m over mud with good holding. The setting — with the full panorama of Valletta's 16th-century limestone walls rising across the water — is one of the finest marina vistas in the Mediterranean. Well protected from the south sector; exposed to the N and NE through the harbour mouth. Gregale (NE gale, Nov–Mar) builds dangerous swell inside Marsamxett rapidly. Report to Valletta VTS (VHF Ch 16/12) before arrival. Reciprocal arrangements available for visiting yacht club members.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
80m radius for marina/mooring area in Marsamxett Harbour. N/NE Gregale exposure through harbour mouth is the primary hazard — in Gregale, swell enters Marsamxett rapidly and dangerously. Mediterranean tidal range <30cm: no tidal correction needed.

Royal Malta Yacht Club marina in Marsamxett Harbour, on the south side of the harbour between Ta' Xbiex and Msida Creek. Pontoon and stern-to berths in 3–6m over mud. Good protection from S, SW, W, and SE — the main Valletta/Floriana mass provides shelter from the south sector. Exposed to N and NE through the Marsamxett harbour mouth: CRITICAL HAZARD. In Gregale (NE gale, Nov–Mar), dangerous swell develops rapidly inside Marsamxett — the harbour mouth faces NE and Gregale swell enters and builds with very little attenuation. In Gregale conditions the RMYC marina itself receives surge and breaking swell from the harbour entrance. This is the most dangerous exposure in Malta for a marina berth. Report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16/12 before arrival. Mediterranean tidal range <30cm: no tidal corrections needed. 80m alarm radius appropriate for marina mooring in Marsamxett given the harbour extent.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival. Provide vessel name, call sign, ETA, and last port of call. Follow VTS berth instructions.
- Anchor in 3–6m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal correction needed, but wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m is possible in strong winds.
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (30m chain at 6m depth) on a mud or sand bottom for maximum holding.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to N and NE winds and swell. The primary overnight hazard in the Grand Harbour area is the Gregale NE gale (Nov–Mar): if a Gregale develops, move to Kalkara Creek or Dockyard Creek for complete shelter, or run south to Marsaxlokk Bay.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below.
Open year-round as a marina facility. Summer (May–October) is the ideal season for Marsamxett — the Majjistral (NW) sea breeze keeps temperatures comfortable and Gregale risk is low. November–March is Gregale season: the NE exposure through the harbour mouth becomes the dominant concern. In confirmed Gregale forecasts, guests berth at Grand Harbour or move south to Marsaxlokk Bay. The view of Valletta from a winter berth here — floodlit fortifications across the water — is extraordinary.
Navigation Hazards
- Gregale NE gale (Nov–Mar): dangerous swell develops rapidly inside Marsamxett — the harbour mouth faces NE and provides minimal attenuation; this is the most dangerous Gregale exposure in Malta; consider immediate move to Grand Harbour in Gregale conditions
- Marsamxett ferry traffic — regular ferry crossings between Sliema and Valletta throughout the day; maintain watch and keep clear
- EES biometric registration since October 2025: non-EU nationals must register at Grand Harbour (Port of Entry) on first arrival
- Valletta VTS: report on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival — mandatory for commercial vessels, strongly recommended for yachts
Rules & Regulations
- EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: clear customs at Grand Harbour (24/7) or Mġarr Gozo (24/7). Fly yellow Q flag. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.
- Valletta VTS: Mandatory report on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival. Commercial vessels have absolute priority at all times.
- Anchoring fee: Marina/mooring berths — contact RMYC directly; reciprocal club arrangements may apply
- Restrictions: Contact RMYC ahead of arrival for berth availability. Report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival. In Gregale (NE gale) conditions: dangerous swell develops inside Marsamxett — consider moving to Grand Harbour or Marsaxlokk Bay. 5 knot speed limit throughout Marsamxett Harbour.
