Best Anchorages near Grand Harbour
Grand Harbour is one of the world's great natural harbours — flanked by the UNESCO bastions of Valletta, open 24/7, with a yacht club marina in Marsamxett, quiet creeks in the Three Cities, and the colourful luzzu fishing bay at Marsaxlokk. These 8 verified locations cover every anchorage in the Valletta area.
About Grand Harbour & Valletta
Grand Harbour — UNESCO Heritage
Grand Harbour is Malta's main commercial port and a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected by the bastions of Valletta (built by the Knights of St John from 1566). Commercial vessels have priority at all times. Yachts anchor or moor in Marsamxett Harbour (north of the Valletta peninsula) or in the enclosed creeks of the Three Cities (south side). Report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16/12 at 10nm and 2 hours before arrival.
Marsamxett — Yacht Hub
Marsamxett Harbour (north of Valletta) is the principal yacht anchorage — the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) marina at Msida and the free anchorage between Sliema and Valletta. Good mud holding, 4–8m depth, protected from S/SW/W. The critical hazard is the Gregale (NE gale): when it blows, Marsamxett develops dangerous swell. In Gregale conditions, move to Kalkara Creek or Marsaxlokk Bay on the SE coast.
Three Cities — Hidden Gem
Kalkara Creek and Dockyard Creek on the south side of Grand Harbour offer the best all-weather protection in Malta — completely enclosed, negligible swell even in Gregale. Walk to Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea, and Cospicua — the medieval citadels of the Knights of St John. Quieter than Marsamxett, with a more local atmosphere. Check for commercial boat movements.
Marsaxlokk — SE Malta
Marsaxlokk Bay on the SE coast is Malta's best Gregale refuge — protected from N/NW/NE (the Gregale directions). The fishing village of Marsaxlokk has one of the Mediterranean's most colourful harbours: traditional luzzu boats with painted eyes. Good sand/mud holding, 6–12m. Stay well clear of the Freeport container terminal shipping lanes on the east side of the bay.
Gregale (NE Gale) — Dangerous Swell in Marsamxett
The Gregale is Malta's most dangerous wind — a violent NE gale that can reach near-hurricane force Nov–Mar. When the Gregale blows, Marsamxett Harbour develops dangerous swell and the Grand Harbour entrance may be restricted. Warning signs: rapidly falling barometer, cirrus cloud from the NE. In a Gregale forecast: move to Kalkara Creek or Dockyard Creek (completely enclosed, best shelter in Malta) or run south to Marsaxlokk Bay. In summer (May–Sep) the Gregale is rare; prevailing winds are NW Majjistral and SE Xlokk.
Valletta VTS — Mandatory Report on VHF Ch 16/12
All vessels approaching Grand Harbour or Marsamxett must report to Valletta VTS on VHF Ch 16 (working Ch 12) at 10nm out and 2 hours before arrival. Provide: vessel name, call sign, ETA, last port of call. Follow VTS instructions for berth assignment. Non-EU boats: fly yellow Q flag — Malta is EU but not Schengen. Customs clearance at Grand Harbour or Mġarr Gozo (both 24/7). EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.
