Marsaskala Creek Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Wied il-Ghajn anchorage, Marsaxlokk north creek, Marsascala

Marsaskala (Wied il-Ghajn) is one of Malta's most attractive coastal towns — a working-class fishing village that has grown into a pleasant residential town surrounding a narrow creek. Anchorage in the outer creek in 2–6m over sand and mud with good holding. The creek narrows significantly inside — larger yachts (over 12m LOA) should anchor in the outer section. The town wraps completely around the creek with a beautiful waterfront promenade, restaurants, and cafés. Exposed to the east and northeast. A very different atmosphere from tourist-heavy areas — authentic Maltese town life.

The Anchorage

Anchorage in the outer section of Marsaskala Creek in 2–6m over sand and mud. Good holding. Well-sheltered from NW through S. Exposed to E and NE. The creek is narrow and shallow — larger yachts should anchor in the outer section only. The charming town of Marsaskala (Wied il-Ghajn) wraps around the creek with waterfront promenade, restaurants, and cafés. One of Malta's most attractive small-town anchorages.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Marsaskala Creek is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for Malta Radio — Marsaxlokk Bay has active Freeport commercial shipping. Large container vessels have priority and operate at all hours from the east side of the bay.
  2. Anchor in 26m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal depth correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong winds.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (30m chain at 6m depth). Verify the bottom is sand or mud — check for Posidonia seagrass (EU protected) before dropping the anchor.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Spade, Mantus.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Marsaskala Creek are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to E and NE winds. The primary overnight hazard in Marsaxlokk is the Xlokk (Scirocco) SE wind: when it blows, the entire bay faces directly into the swell — seek shelter in Grand Harbour immediately at any strong SE forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius before going below. 70m radius in 3–5m sand/mud. Good holding. Narrow creek — larger yachts anchor in outer section only. Exposed to E and NE. Charming town with waterfront restaurants and promenade.

April–October. An excellent overnight stop in settled conditions. E and NE exposure — check forecast before overnight. Year-round in settled weather.

Navigation Hazards

  • E and NE exposure — leave if easterly or NE (Gregale) wind forecast
  • Creek narrows inside — larger yachts stay in outer section
  • Small boat moorings along creek walls — anchor clear

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Grand Harbour (Valletta) is the official 24/7 customs clearance point for Malta. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.
  • Posidonia: EU protected throughout Maltese waters — anchor only in sand or mud patches. Fines apply. Use mooring buoys where provided.
  • Freeport shipping: Commercial container shipping traffic on the east side of Marsaxlokk Bay — maintain a minimum 0.5nm clearance. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial vessel announcements.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Larger yachts (>12m) should stay in outer creek section — narrows significantly. Shallow inner creek. E and NE exposure. Keep clear of small boat moorings along the creek walls.

Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
