Marsaxlokk Bay — Main Anchorage Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Marsaxlokk anchorage, Il-Bajja ta' Marsaxlokk, Malta fishing village anchorage

Marsaxlokk is Malta's most famous and colourful fishing village — a working harbour full of traditional luzzu fishing boats, their distinctive painted eyes on the bow representing an ancient Phoenician tradition of protection at sea. The large bay provides excellent shelter from the prevailing NW Majjistral wind in 5–12m over sand and mud with good holding. The village hosts a famous Sunday fish market and colourful waterfront restaurants serving fresh catch. The bay faces SE — the direction of the Xlokk (Scirocco) wind from which it takes its name — so it is uncomfortable in strong southeasterlies. The commercial Freeport container terminal occupies the east side of the bay; stay well clear of shipping.

Anchoring Zones

Marsaxlokk Bay — Main Anchorage has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.

Zone 1: Marsaxlokk Bay — NW section (best shelter from NW)

  • Depth: 512m
  • Bottom: sand, mud
  • Holding: Good
  • Protected from: N, NW, W, SW
  • Exposed to: SE, E
  • Recommended alarm radius: 100m

Main anchorage in the northwest section of Marsaxlokk Bay in 5–12m over sand and mud. Good holding throughout — sandy mud provides reliable grip. Well-sheltered from N, NW, and W — ideal in the prevailing summer Majjistral (NW) wind. The bay faces SE (the direction of the Xlokk wind for which it is named) — open to SE swell and uncomfortable in the Scirocco. The picturesque village of Marsaxlokk is visible on the NW shore. Keep clear of the fishing harbour entrance (NW corner) and the commercial Freeport area (east side of bay).

Zone 2: Marsaxlokk Bay — central (deeper, more room)

  • Depth: 816m
  • Bottom: sand, mud
  • Holding: Good
  • Protected from: N, NW, W
  • Exposed to: SE, S, E
  • Recommended alarm radius: 120m

Central bay anchorage in 8–16m over sand and mud. More room for larger vessels but more exposed to SE swell than the NW corner. Good mud holding. Maintain clear lane for Freeport commercial traffic on east side of bay. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial vessel movements.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Marsaxlokk Bay — Main Anchorage is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for Malta Radio — Marsaxlokk Bay has active Freeport commercial shipping. Large container vessels have priority and operate at all hours from the east side of the bay.
  2. Anchor in 512m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal depth correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong winds.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (60m chain at 12m depth). Verify the bottom is sand or mud — check for Posidonia seagrass (EU protected) before dropping the anchor.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Spade, Delta, Mantus.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Marsaxlokk Bay — Main Anchorage are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to SE and E winds. The primary overnight hazard in Marsaxlokk is the Xlokk (Scirocco) SE wind: when it blows, the entire bay faces directly into the swell — seek shelter in Grand Harbour immediately at any strong SE forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 100m radius before going below. 100m radius in 7–10m sand/mud. Good holding. SE (Xlokk) exposure: leave or relocate to Grand Harbour if strong SE forecast. Keep clear of fishing harbour entrance and Freeport commercial shipping. Monitor VHF Ch 16.

Best April–October in NW/W conditions. An excellent base for visiting southeast Malta. Avoid when Xlokk (SE) is forecast — the bay faces directly SE and conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Winter is possible in settled NW conditions but the Xlokk exposure remains a risk.

Navigation Hazards

  • SE (Xlokk/Scirocco) exposure — uncomfortable and potentially dangerous in strong SE blow; relocate to Grand Harbour in strong SE forecast
  • Freeport commercial shipping — large container vessels operate from the east side of the bay; maintain wide clearance
  • Fishing boat traffic — the fishing fleet departs and returns to the village harbour throughout the day
  • Fishing nets and longlines may extend from fishing vessels at anchor in the bay

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Grand Harbour (Valletta) is the official 24/7 customs clearance point for Malta. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.
  • Posidonia: EU protected throughout Maltese waters — anchor only in sand or mud patches. Fines apply. Use mooring buoys where provided.
  • Freeport shipping: Commercial container shipping traffic on the east side of Marsaxlokk Bay — maintain a minimum 0.5nm clearance. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial vessel announcements.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Keep clear of the fishing harbour entrance (NW corner). Maintain clear separation from Freeport commercial shipping lanes (east side). SE (Xlokk) exposure: leave for Grand Harbour if strong SE forecast. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial traffic.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Visit on a Sunday morning for the famous Marsaxlokk fish market — one of Malta's most colourful experiences
  2. Anchor in the NW section of the bay (closest to the village) for best shelter from NW wind and most convenient dinghy access to the village
  3. The waterfront restaurants serve excellent fresh fish — book ahead in summer
  4. Check the Xlokk (SE wind) forecast before committing to overnight — leave for Grand Harbour (8nm W) if Scirocco is forecast
  5. Keep well clear of the Freeport eastern side — shipping lanes carry large container vessels

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
