Marsaxlokk Inner Bay Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Marsaxlokk village anchorage, Marsaxlokk inner harbour, Il-Port ta' Marsaxlokk

The inner bay of Marsaxlokk directly fronting the village is the most convenient anchorage for visiting the famous Sunday fish market and the waterfront restaurants. Shallower water (3–7m) with good sand/mud holding. The fishing fleet is active throughout the day — the luzzu boats with their painted eyes are remarkable up close. A short dinghy ride to the village quay. This is the most characterful anchorage in Malta — surrounded by working fishing culture and traditional waterfront life.

The Anchorage

Shallower anchorage in the inner bay section closest to Marsaxlokk village in 3–7m over sand and mud. Good holding and closest position to the famous fish market and waterfront restaurants. Busy with fishing boats — anchor with care and consideration for working fishing vessel traffic. The fishing harbour entrance is to the NW — maintain a wide berth. Ideal for visiting the village by dinghy.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Marsaxlokk Inner Bay is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for Malta Radio — Marsaxlokk Bay has active Freeport commercial shipping. Large container vessels have priority and operate at all hours from the east side of the bay.
  2. Anchor in 37m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal depth correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong winds.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (35m chain at 7m depth). Verify the bottom is sand or mud — check for Posidonia seagrass (EU protected) before dropping the anchor.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Spade, Mantus.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Marsaxlokk Inner Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to SE and E winds. The primary overnight hazard in Marsaxlokk is the Xlokk (Scirocco) SE wind: when it blows, the entire bay faces directly into the swell — seek shelter in Grand Harbour immediately at any strong SE forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below. 80m radius in 4–6m sand/mud. Good holding. Fishing harbour entrance nearby — maintain clearance. Best position for visiting Marsaxlokk village by dinghy. SE exposure: leave if Xlokk (SE) forecast.

Best April–October. Sunday morning fish market year-round. SE (Xlokk) exposure means caution required at any time of year — check forecast before overnight.

Navigation Hazards

  • Active fishing harbour with constant fishing boat movement — give way to working fishing vessels at all times
  • Fishing nets and longlines in the water — watch propeller clearance when moving
  • SE (Xlokk) exposure — leave for outer bay or Grand Harbour in SE forecast

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Grand Harbour (Valletta) is the official 24/7 customs clearance point for Malta. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.

  • Freeport shipping: Commercial container shipping traffic on the east side of Marsaxlokk Bay — maintain a minimum 0.5nm clearance. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial vessel announcements.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
