About This Anchorage

Leixões is the port of Porto — Portugal's second city and wine capital. The harbour is a major commercial port with extensive facilities including a large yacht marina. It provides the best all-weather refuge on the northern Portuguese coast. Porto city centre is accessible by Metro from Matosinhos (the adjacent municipality) — one of Europe's most beautiful and vibrant cities, home to the Port wine lodges across the Douro, the Ribeira waterfront (UNESCO World Heritage), and extraordinary food and culture. A mandatory stop for any N Portuguese coast cruise. Fuel and water available by pipe. The famous Portuguese cuisine is at its finest in Porto — the Francesinha sandwich, bacalhau, and local Vinho Verde.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Marina berthing rates apply — no free anchoring inside the commercial harbour
Permit required
No

Restrictions: COMMERCIAL PORT VTS: Contact Leixões Port Control (VTS) on VHF Ch. 16 before entry. Large commercial vessel traffic requires keeping strictly to the yacht channel. No anchoring inside the harbour except in designated areas. Follow all VTS instructions. Non-EU vessels must complete customs/immigration clearance at the port office.

Hazards

  • !COMMERCIAL PORT: Very large cargo ships and oil tankers share the harbour — strict VTS compliance required; keep well clear of large vessel traffic at all times
  • !Tidal currents at the harbour entrance: 1.5–2 knots at springs — entering or leaving against a strong ebb in Atlantic swell conditions requires care
  • !ORCA ZONE: The offshore N Portuguese coast between Leixões and the Minho is within the Iberian orca interaction area — monitor orcas.pt for any offshore passages

Skipper's Tips

  • Porto is one of the most rewarding cities in Europe for cruising sailors — spend at least 2 nights to explore the Ribeira, Douro wine caves, and food scene
  • The Port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia (across the Douro from Porto centre) offer tours and tastings — accessible by Metro from Matosinhos
  • Matosinhos seafood restaurants (R. de Heróis de França and surrounding streets) are outstanding — grilled fish and seafood, wood ovens, reasonable prices
  • The Rio Douro entry (4nm S of Leixões) is not recommended for yachts due to the strong tidal bar and commercial traffic; use Leixões as your Porto base
