About This Anchorage

Póvoa de Varzim is a major N Portuguese fishing town and resort — active fishing fleet, beach resort, and modest marina. As a sailing destination it is primarily a waypoint between Viana do Castelo and Leixões/Porto. The harbour is a working fishing port first, with limited yacht facilities. Exposed to the prevailing NW Atlantic — only viable in settled E or NE conditions. Worth a brief stop for provisions and the excellent daily fish market, but Leixões or Viana are better overnight bases. The town has an active surfing culture and excellent beaches.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (in harbour approach only in settled conditions)
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Commercial fishing port — keep the fishing boat channels clear. Marina berth required for overnight — contact harbour on VHF Ch. 16. W/NW exposure makes this unsuitable for overnight except in perfect stable conditions.

Hazards

  • !W/NW exposure — standard Atlantic NW swell makes the anchorage uncomfortable and potentially dangerous; Leixões is the preferred base
  • !Active fishing fleet — heavy traffic at all hours; keep harbour approach clear
  • !Harbour entrance approach in W swell requires care — check swell height before approach

Skipper's Tips

  • Best used as a fuel/provisions stop on a Viana–Leixões passage — do not plan overnight here unless forecast is absolutely settled
  • The fish market and waterfront restaurants are excellent — worth a 2-hour stop for fresh provisions
