Portugal — Costa Verde — Norte de Portugal

Anchorages in Costa Verde (Norte)

Northern Portugal's green coast is Atlantic sailing at its most demanding — river bars, swell, and almost no natural anchorages. All bar crossings require careful timing at half-flood in calm conditions. Not recommended for inexperienced crews.

CRITICAL — River Bar Crossings

All river entrances on the Portuguese Norte coast are dangerous in swell. Enter ONLY at half-flood via the correct (south/main) channel — bar depths change seasonally. If in doubt, wait at sea or proceed to Leixões (all-weather commercial port). Viana do Castelo bar
