Koper Commercial Approach Bay Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Koper outer bay west, Koper waiting anchorage, Koprski zaliv approach

Outer bay anchorage W of the Koper commercial port entrance — a deep-water anchorage in 5–12m over mud with good holding. Protected from W and SW; exposed to N, NE, and SE. The primary use is as a waiting anchorage for boats unable to enter Marina Koper immediately, or for overnight stops on passage between Izola and Muggia/Trieste. Commercial vessel traffic is the dominant consideration — stay well clear of the port approach channel and monitor VHF Ch 16 for port movements. The views of Koper's commercial port and the Karst Plateau behind are impressive.

The Anchorage

Deep-water anchorage in 5–12m over mud W of the Koper commercial port entrance. Good mud holding once set. Protected from NW, W, and SW; exposed to N, NE, E, and SE. The primary constraint is the commercial vessel port approach channel — stay WELL CLEAR of the marked channel at all times. Commercial cargo ships, tankers, container vessels, and Ro-Ro ferries use this channel and have absolute priority. Monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously. Used primarily as a waiting anchorage for boats unable to enter Marina Koper immediately, or for overnight stops on passage between Izola and Muggia/Trieste. Anchor in minimum 8–9m at high tide to account for the 1m+ tidal range. 80m alarm radius reflects the deep mud anchoring position and Northern Adriatic tidal movement, plus an additional margin to ensure the swinging circle clears the port approach channel.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Koper Commercial Approach Bay is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Monitor VHF Ch 16 before approaching Koper — commercial vessels have priority at all times. Stay well clear of the port approach channel.
  2. Anchor in 512m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth to account for the Gulf of Trieste tidal range (the highest in the Mediterranean basin).
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (60m chain at 12m depth) — tidal movement at springs can significantly shift the rode angle.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Koper Commercial Approach Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to N and NE and E and SE winds. The Gulf of Trieste tidal range — the highest in the Mediterranean basin — means your boat will swing further on the rode than anywhere else in the Adriatic.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below. 80m radius in 8–10m mud. Good holding. Critical: monitor commercial vessel movements and ensure you are well clear of the port approach channel. 1m+ tidal range adds to alarm radius.

Best May–September as a short-stay waiting or overnight anchorage in settled conditions. The position is primarily functional — used when Marina Koper is full or as a passage waypoint — rather than a destination in its own right. Commercial port activity continues year-round; the anchorage can be used at any time of year in settled conditions, but is not suitable as an overnight position in Bora, Jugo, or NE wind conditions at any season.

Navigation Hazards

  • Commercial port approach channel — stay well clear at all times; commercial vessels (cargo ships, tankers, container vessels) have absolute priority; monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously
  • N/NE exposure — Bora from NE arrives quickly; Marina Koper (0.8nm E) is the nearest refuge; leave at first cap cloud sign
  • Large vessel wakes from cargo ships and tankers entering/exiting Koper port — can generate significant beam swell at this position
  • SE exposure in Jugo (Sirocco) conditions — Jugo swell can build significantly across the Gulf of Trieste; leave for Marina Koper if Jugo is forecast

Rules & Regulations

  • EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Koper is the official customs clearance point for Slovenia — fly yellow Q flag and contact harbour master on VHF Ch 16. 18-month TIR for non-EU flagged boats.
  • Anchoring fee: Free — stay clear of commercial vessel shipping lanes and port approach channel
  • Restrictions: CRITICAL: Stay well clear of the commercial port approach channel at all times — commercial vessels have absolute priority. Monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously. Fair-weather anchorage — N/NE/SE exposure. Leave for Marina Koper (0.8nm E) if Bora is forecast. Anchor in minimum 8–9m at high tide.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Waiting anchorage for Marina Koper — useful if marina is full on arrival; call VHF Ch 16 for marina availability
  2. Monitor VHF Ch 16 for commercial vessel movements at all times
  3. Deep mud — good holding once set; use engine reverse test before leaving the boat
  4. Excellent view of the Karst Plateau above Koper — the terrain that funnels the Bora wind

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
