Slovenia — Koper

Best Anchorages near Koper

The northernmost marina on the Adriatic — 75 berths inside Slovenia's only commercial port, 10km from Italy, with Trieste 20 minutes by car and Venice 2 hours. These 6 verified locations cover the marina, Ankaran Bay, the Italian border at Muggia, and every free anchorage in the Koper area.

About Koper

Northernmost Adriatic Marina

Marina Koper is the northernmost marina on the entire Adriatic — 75 berths for yachts up to 18m LOA and 3.5m draft, with a 70-tonne travel lift and full boatyard services. Situated inside Slovenia's only commercial port, it is the official customs clearance point for non-EU boats entering or exiting Slovenia. Popular with central European boat owners who arrive by road and launch here for Adriatic circuits heading south.

Koper Old Town

Koper (Capo d'Istria in Italian) has a handsome Venetian old town — a large central square, a Gothic loggia, a Titian Madonna in the cathedral, and the remains of medieval defensive walls. Compact and walkable from the marina. Less visited than Piran; more authentic. The Italian border is 10km W — Trieste is 20 minutes by car, making Koper a practical crew change hub for boats on extended voyages.

Gulf of Trieste Tides

Koper is at the apex of the Adriatic — the highest tidal range in the entire Mediterranean basin, reaching 1m or more at springs. This affects every anchoring decision: add 1–2m to alarm radius for tidal rode movement, and anchor in 2m more water than your draft requires. Confirm marina berth depth at low water (not mean level) for deep-keel boats.

Approach & Commercial Port

Koper is a working commercial port — cargo vessels, tankers, and ferries have priority at all times. Monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously when approaching. The marina is inside the commercial port breakwaters; follow the leading marks and harbour master instructions. Free anchorages in the area (Ankaran Bay, Koper Bay North) are outside the commercial shipping lanes.

Koper Commercial Port — Monitor VHF Ch 16 at All Times

Koper is Slovenia's only commercial port — cargo vessels, tankers, and ferries operate 24 hours. Commercial vessels have absolute priority. Monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously when approaching or anchoring near the port. Stay well clear of the approach channel (marked on charts). Marina Koper: 75 berths, 3.5m max draft — call ahead on VHF Ch 16. Non-EU boats: Koper is the official customs clearance point for Slovenia — fly yellow Q flag on entry.

Muggia Bay — Italian Territory, EU/Schengen Applies

The muggia-bay anchorage in this guide is in Italian territorial waters (Muggia, Province of Trieste), 10km from Koper. For EU boats: no formalities — EU/Schengen freedom of movement applies. For non-EU boats: you must obtain an exit stamp from Slovenian customs at Koper before crossing. Italian customs clearance required on arrival at Muggia. Non-EU boats should treat this as a separate country entry.
