Marina Koper Visitors Berths Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Marina Koper, Koper Marina, Capo d'Istria Marina
Marina Koper — 75 berths for yachts up to 18m LOA and 3.5m draft, situated inside Slovenia's only commercial port. The northernmost marina on the Adriatic. A 70-tonne travel lift and full boatyard services. 10km from the Italian border, making it a popular European yacht launching base for owners arriving by road from central Europe. Koper old town (Capo d'Istria) has a handsome Venetian central square with a loggia directly behind the marina. From here, Trieste is 20 minutes by car and Venice is 2 hours — making it a practical start/end point for Adriatic circuits.

Pontoon berths for visiting yachts within the enclosed commercial port breakwaters. The marina is fully enclosed and sheltered from all directions by the Koper commercial port breakwater system. Maximum draft 3.5m — deeper-keeled vessels should check tide state on entry. 75 berths for yachts up to 18m LOA. A 70-tonne travel lift is on site — the marina is the primary boatyard for yachts arriving by road from central Europe (Austria, Hungary, Slovakia) for mast stepping and commissioning. 1m+ tidal range in the Gulf of Trieste has minimal practical impact inside the marina on a pontoon berth, but deeper-draft yachts (3m+) should be aware of the tide state. Call ahead on VHF Ch 16 or by phone — berths are limited and commercial port access may require coordination. The marina is within the commercial port perimeter; follow harbour master instructions at all times.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Marina Koper Visitors Berths is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Monitor VHF Ch 16 before approaching Koper — commercial vessels have priority at all times. Stay well clear of the port approach channel.
- Anchor in 2–3.5m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth to account for the Gulf of Trieste tidal range (the highest in the Mediterranean basin).
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (18m chain at 3.5m depth) — tidal movement at springs can significantly shift the rode angle.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Marina Koper Visitors Berths are excellent — the enclosed commercial port breakwaters provide all-round protection. The Gulf of Trieste tidal range — the highest in the Mediterranean basin — means your boat will swing further on the rode than anywhere else in the Adriatic.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 30m radius before going below. 30m radius for pontoon berth. Marina fully enclosed within the commercial port breakwaters — 1m+ tidal range has minimal impact on alarm in berth. 70-tonne travel lift on site.
Open year-round — the marina is operational all 12 months and is the primary year-round base for the Koper region. Peak season (June–September) the marina is at highest occupancy; call ahead. Off-season (October–May) the marina is quieter with better berth availability and the boatyard is active with annual maintenance work. Bora frequency increases October–March — the enclosed marina is the safest base in the region during this period.
Navigation Hazards
- Commercial port — large cargo vessels, ferries, and tankers have priority; follow harbour master instructions at all times
- Entrance channel — well-marked but keep clear of commercial vessel traffic; monitor VHF Ch 16 continuously in the port approach
- Bora wind: 20-minute arrival time from cap cloud formation above Karst plateau — marina provides full shelter once inside; the approach in Bora is dangerous
- Draft 3.5m maximum — check tide state at entry for deeper-keel boats; tidal range 1m+ in the Gulf of Trieste
Rules & Regulations
- EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Koper is the official customs clearance point for Slovenia — fly yellow Q flag and contact harbour master on VHF Ch 16. 18-month TIR for non-EU flagged boats.
- Anchoring fee: Pontoon berth: ~€35–80/night; 75 berths for yachts up to 18m LOA; call ahead
