Muggia Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Baia di Muggia, Milje, Muggia anchorage, Muggia/Milje
Muggia Bay — an anchorage just across the Italian border (10km from Koper) in the small historic town of Muggia, the last Venetian medieval town before Trieste. Mud bottom with good holding in 3–7m. Protected from the W sector; exposed to N and NE. Muggia old town has a Venetian palace, tiny central piazza, and excellent local trattorie serving Friulian-Istrian cuisine — a different culinary and cultural experience from the Slovenian coast. This anchorage is technically in Italian waters — no formalities for EU boats (Schengen), but non-EU boats must clear out of Slovenia before proceeding here.

Anchorage in Muggia Bay in 3–7m over mud. Good holding throughout. Protected from W, NW, and SW; exposed to N, NE, and E. NOTE: This anchorage is in Italian territorial waters (Muggia is Italian territory, municipality of Trieste). EU/Schengen applies — no formalities for EU boats transitioning between Slovenia and Muggia. Non-EU boats must complete Slovenian exit formalities at Koper before crossing, and Italian customs apply on arrival at Muggia. The old town of Muggia has a Venetian medieval centre — the last Venetian medieval town before Trieste. Excellent local trattorie serving Friulian-Istrian cuisine. Anchor in minimum 5–6m at high tide to account for the 1m+ tidal range in the Gulf of Trieste. 65m alarm radius accounts for scope in 4–6m mud.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Muggia Bay is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Monitor VHF Ch 16 before approaching Koper — commercial vessels have priority at all times. Stay well clear of the port approach channel.
- Anchor in 3–7m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth to account for the Gulf of Trieste tidal range (the highest in the Mediterranean basin).
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (35m chain at 7m depth) — tidal movement at springs can significantly shift the rode angle.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Muggia Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to N and NE and E winds. The Gulf of Trieste tidal range — the highest in the Mediterranean basin — means your boat will swing further on the rode than anywhere else in the Adriatic.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 65m radius before going below. 65m radius in 4–6m mud. Good holding. Note: Italian territorial waters — EU/Schengen applies, no formalities for EU boats. 1m+ tidal range in Gulf of Trieste.
Best May–October. October is a notably good month at Muggia — the summer crowds have gone, the trattorie are at their quietest and most authentic, and the autumn Istrian truffle season is in full swing. May and June are excellent. July–August is peak season on the Trieste Gulf; Muggia town is busy with Italian day-trippers but the anchorage itself remains quiet. Not recommended for overnight stays after October due to increasing Bora and NE gale frequency.
Navigation Hazards
- N/NE exposure — Bora arrives with minimal warning; Marina Muggia (small, Italian) or Marina Koper (10km) are the options
- Non-EU boats: Italian customs required on entry; ensure Slovenian exit stamp before crossing
- Commercial vessel traffic on approach to Trieste port — keep clear of shipping lanes; Trieste is a major commercial port
- Tidal range 1m+ in Gulf of Trieste — one of the highest tidal ranges in the Mediterranean basin; anchor in minimum 5–6m at high tide
Rules & Regulations
- EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Koper is the official customs clearance point for Slovenia — fly yellow Q flag and contact harbour master on VHF Ch 16. 18-month TIR for non-EU flagged boats.
- Anchoring fee: Free — note: this anchorage is in Italian territorial waters (Muggia is Italian territory); EU/Schengen — no border formalities for EU boats
- Restrictions: Italian territorial waters — ensure correct customs status before crossing. Fair-weather anchorage — N/NE exposure. Leave for Marina Koper or Marina Muggia if Bora is forecast. Anchor in minimum 5–6m at high tide. Keep clear of Trieste port approach shipping lanes.
