Büyük Menderes Mouth Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Meander River Mouth, Büyük Menderes Deltası, Menderes Estuary
The Büyük Menderes (the ancient Meander River, which gives the English word 'meander') flows into the Aegean through a rapidly extending delta that has been accreting for millennia. The ancient Greek city of Miletos once sat at the river mouth — today it is 10km inland, testament to the delta's growth. The delta is a remarkable birdwatching site with a protected wetland ecosystem, hosting migratory birds, herons, flamingos, and diverse wetland species. Access by water requires very shallow draft — keelboats must anchor outside and use the dinghy.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
30m maximum — the draft restriction means you are operating in very shallow water. CRITICAL: maximum draft 0.5–1.0m for delta exploration. Keelboats should anchor in the outer approaches (2–3m) and use the dinghy for any delta access. The Büyük Menderes delta is one of the fastest-accreting deltas in the Mediterranean — charts are always out of date. Leadline or pole essential.

EXTREME DRAFT RESTRICTION: maximum 0.5–1.0m for river delta exploration. Muddy bottom with excellent holding but depth is critically limited — the Meander River delta is one of the most rapidly silting deltas in the world. Charts are unreliable — approach at dead slow speed with a leadline or pole. For observation and birdwatching only; keelboats stay in the outer approaches.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Büyük Menderes Mouth is primarily mud and sand with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 0.5–2m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (14m chain at 2m depth).
- Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.
Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Büyük Menderes Mouth are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 30m radius before going below for the night.30m maximum — the draft restriction means you are operating in very shallow water.
Best April–May and September–October for birdwatching (migration seasons). Summer visits are possible but bird activity is reduced and the heat is intense. Not recommended as an overnight base — use Kuşadası or Didim Marina instead.
Navigation Hazards
- CRITICAL — Extreme shoaling: the delta is one of the fastest-accreting in the Mediterranean; depths shown on charts are unreliable and often wrong
- Draft limit 0.5–1.0m — keelboats must NOT enter delta channels
- S/SW/W exposure in the outer approaches — not a reliable overnight anchorage in unsettled conditions
- Submerged obstacles including reed beds, mud banks, and old fishing gear
- Remote area — no emergency services nearby
Rules & Regulations

- Anchoring fee: Free
- Restrictions: DRAFT LIMIT: maximum 0.5–1.0m for delta channels. Charts are unreliable — use leadline/pole at all times. Environmental sensitivity area — no discharge, no litter. Birdwatching: no loud noise.

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
