About This Anchorage
The Étang de Thau is the largest coastal lagoon in France — 20km long, up to 10km wide, and protected from the Gulf of Lion by a narrow barrier of sand dunes. It is home to France's most celebrated oyster and mussel farming industry (the Bouzigues oysters, farmed on the N shore, are considered the finest in France). The lagoon offers outstanding protection from the Mistral and Tramontane — when the Gulf is a war zone of 60kt winds, the Étang de Thau is millpond calm. The gateway town of Sète is one of the most authentic ports on the Languedoc coast — famous for its canals, fish market, tielles (octopus pies), and as the birthplace of poet Paul Valéry and singer Georges Brassens. The Étang de Thau is also the entry point to the Canal du Midi (Atlantic passage).

Setting Your Anchor
- 1.DONIA app first: Before dropping anchor anywhere on the Gulf of Lion coast, open the DONIA app and verify no Posidonia meadows are present at your intended spot. Anchoring on Posidonia carries fines of up to €150,000 — no exceptions.
- 2.7:1 scope minimum: The Gulf of Lion demands maximum holding. Use at least 7:1 scope (chain length to depth) at Étang de Thau — Sète approaches. On sandy bottoms, reverse slowly to set the anchor firmly before trusting it.
- 3.Mistral escape plan: Before anchoring, identify your nearest marina or lagoon refuge and confirm you can reach it in deteriorating conditions. The Mistral can accelerate from 0 to 50kt in under 2 hours. Always have a plan before the anchor is down.
- 4.Set your anchor alarm to 90m immediately after anchoring. On this coast, you must know the moment your boat moves.

Restrictions: OYSTER FARM EXCLUSION ZONES: The lagoon is dominated by farm structures — navigate ONLY in marked channels. Anchoring ONLY in designated free areas. Damage to oyster/mussel farm structures will result in significant liability. Speed limit 12kt in the lagoon. VHF Ch 12 to Sète Port before entry. Canal du Midi entry at Marseillan Port — VHF notification required.

Skipper's Tips
- →Bouzigues oysters: buy directly from the farm pontoons on the N shore — the freshest, cheapest oysters you will ever eat. Bring a bucket of white wine.
- →Canal du Midi entry at Marseillan Port (W end of the lagoon) — the most beautiful inland waterway in Europe. A detour worth weeks of your time.
- →Sète fish market (Criée de Sète) opens at 06:00 and is one of the great spectacles of the French Mediterranean coast.
Facilities
Sète has outstanding seafood restaurants and a famous fish market. Bouzigues village (on the N lagoon shore) sells oysters direct from the farm pontoons. Try tielles (octopus pies) — a Sète specialty.
