Jūrmala Bulduri Beach Anchorage

Bulduri pludmale · Jūrmala west anchorage

Good
Depth 25msand70m alarm
NNEE

Anchoring off the beach at Jūrmala's Bulduri district is one of the most memorable experiences in Baltic sailing — the 33-kilometre white sand beach, backed by an extraordinary landscape of wooden Art Nouveau villas set among pine forests, creates a scene unlike anywhere else in northern Europe. Jūrmala (literally 'seaside' in Latvian) has been the Baltic's premier resort destination since the Russian imperial nobility discovered it in the 19th century. The tsars built summer villas here, Russian and Latvian intelligentsia spent their summers writing and composing, and today the historic wooden architecture — declared a protected cultural heritage zone — still lines the pine-shaded streets behind the beach. Bulduri is the westernmost of Jūrmala's main beach districts, slightly quieter than the central Majori area, with excellent sand holding in the shallow bay. The water is clean and warm by July (averaging 18–20°C), and the beach scene in summer is lively but not overwhelming. Landing by dinghy gives access to the villa districts, the famous Jūrmala concert hall (Dzintari concert hall hosts international music festivals in summer), and the pine forest paths that connect the beach districts.

Jūrmala Majori Roadstead

Majori pludmale · Jūrmala central anchorage

Good
Depth 26msand75m alarm
NNW

The Majori roadstead is the classic Jūrmala anchorage — sitting off the central beach of Latvia's most famous resort town, with the famous pedestrian street Jomas iela (one of the liveliest streets in the Baltic states in summer) running parallel to the beach just 200 metres ashore. Jūrmala at its Majori centre is a vibrant, cosmopolitan Baltic resort: Art Nouveau and wooden vernacular architecture, an extraordinary restaurant scene (Jūrmala has some of the best restaurants in Latvia), the Dzintari concert and festival venues, and the Jūrmala City Museum. The roadstead provides a good holding ground in sand and mud, with reasonable shelter from northerly winds, and the position gives access by dinghy to the full facilities of central Jūrmala. The beach at Majori is broad, well-maintained, and busy — reaching peak popularity in late July when Latvian families, Russian tourists, and international visitors all converge. Anchoring here in the early season (June) or late season (August/September) gives a much more relaxed experience. The Sloka River (the defining feature that separates Jūrmala from the mainland) is navigable by dinghy in calm conditions, giving access to the lagoon-like inner waterway.

Ķemeri Coast Anchorage

Ķemeri pludmale · Ķemeri National Park coast

Good
Depth 25msand75m alarm
NNE

The Ķemeri coast anchorage sits off one of Latvia's most extraordinary national parks — Ķemeri National Park, which protects a remarkable mosaic of bog landscapes, mineral springs, forest, and Baltic coastline just 35km from Riga. The park is best known for its Great Bog (Lielais tīrelis), accessible via a wooden boardwalk — one of the most impressive bog landscapes in the eastern Baltic, with carnivorous plants, bog pools, and the silence of a truly wild place within easy distance of the capital. The coastal anchorage off the park gives access to pristine sandy beach backed directly by protected forest — no houses, no development, no crowds. For sailors seeking the contrast between Jūrmala's lively resort atmosphere and Latvia's wild coastal nature, this anchorage delivers perfectly. The mineral springs at Ķemeri spa (the historic spa town is 4km inland) were famous throughout the Russian Empire for their therapeutic properties, and the historic Ķemeri Hotel (now restored) stands as testament to the spa's 19th-century grandeur. The anchorage is for settled conditions only — fully exposed to southwesterly swells.

Daugavgrīva Roads

Riga port outer roads · Daugava river entrance roads

Good
Depth 410mmud100m alarm
NNWNE

The Daugavgrīva Roads sit at the approaches to the Daugava River — the great river of Latvia that bisects Riga and gave the city its commercial importance over eight centuries of trading history. Riga (founded 1201 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword as a Crusader base) grew into one of the most important Hanseatic cities in the eastern Baltic, its merchants controlling the trade in amber, furs, grain, and timber. The city's extraordinary Art Nouveau architecture (the highest concentration in the world), medieval Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage), and cultural dynamism make it one of the most rewarding cities in the Baltic for visiting sailors. The outer roads provide a staging anchorage before negotiating the Daugava River entrance and navigating 3 miles upstream to the Riga Yacht Club marina at Andrejosta. The approach requires careful chart work — the TSS is active and commercial vessels move continuously through the main channel. The recommended approach is to call Riga Port on VHF Ch 16, confirm the channel is clear, and proceed without hesitation. The Riga Yacht Club at Andrejosta marina is welcoming to visiting yachts and provides the ideal base for exploring the Old Town (10 minutes walk).

Mangaļsala Spit Anchorage

Mangaļsala cape · Riga outer bay east

Good
Depth 37msand85m alarm
SSWW

Mangaļsala is the sandy spit forming the eastern breakwater of the Daugava River mouth — the northern shore of Riga's outer harbour approaches. The anchorage behind the spit offers reasonable shelter from southwesterly winds with good sand and mud holding, making it a useful staging position for vessels waiting for a weather window to enter Riga or for a short stop before continuing east along the Gulf of Riga shore. The spit itself is a long, pine-covered sandbar with a narrow beach — a popular summer destination for Rigans arriving by motor launch. The lighthouse at Mangaļsala (built 1884) stands as a landmark for approaching vessels. The view from the anchorage is dominated by the commercial port activity of Riga — grain terminals, container cranes, and Ro-Ro berths — giving a vivid sense of Latvia's maritime commercial importance. For sailors, the anchorage is primarily a functional stop rather than a destination, although the spit beach is attractive for a swim in calm conditions and the proximity to Riga makes it a useful last anchorage before entering the city's marinas.

Ragaciems Anchorage

Ragaciems pludmale · Ragaciems village bay

Good
Depth 25msand70m alarm
NNE

Ragaciems is a small Latvian summer village south of Jūrmala, just outside the famous resort's boundary but sharing its characteristic landscape of pine forest, white sand beach, and the flat, shallow waters of the eastern Gulf of Riga. The anchorage is significantly quieter than the busy Jūrmala beach anchorages — the village consists mainly of summer houses belonging to Riga families, giving it a relaxed, unhurried character during the high season. The sand bottom provides excellent holding in the calm conditions typical of Baltic summer. The beach is broad, clean, and typically uncrowded compared to Jūrmala proper — perfect for families seeking a peaceful swimming spot with all the natural beauty of the Latvian coast. The pine forests behind the dunes contain pleasant walking paths. Ragaciems is positioned near the boundary of the Ķemeri National Park coastal zone, making it a useful base for nature exploration combined with beach relaxation. For sailors seeking a quiet alternative to the busy Jūrmala anchorages while remaining close to the resort's restaurants and facilities (10nm east), Ragaciems delivers the ideal compromise.

Lapmežciems Bay Anchorage

Lapmežciems pludmale · Lapmežciems coast

Good
Depth 25msand70m alarm
NNEE

Lapmežciems is a quiet anchorage on the western edge of the Jūrmala coastal zone, where the busy resort coastline gives way to the more exposed and wilder coast leading toward the open Gulf of Riga and eventually Cape Kolka. The bay sits amid an extraordinary landscape of pine forest, white sand dunes, and the flat, mirror-calm Baltic waters typical of a settled summer morning. The village of Lapmežciems is small — a handful of traditional farmhouses and summer houses amid the trees, with no tourist infrastructure. For sailors seeking a wild overnight stop within cruising distance of Jūrmala's facilities while being far from the resort's crowds, this anchorage provides the perfect solution: pristine beach, excellent sand holding, pine forest for shelter from the wind, and near-total silence. The coastal landscape here is part of the Engure Nature Park buffer zone, protecting the extraordinary pine forest and dune ecosystem. The approach from the east along the Jūrmala coast is straightforward in settled conditions, keeping in 3m+ water throughout.

Ķesterciems Anchorage

Ķesterciems coast · Ķesterciems forest bay

Good
Depth 25msand70m alarm
NNE

Ķesterciems offers one of the most truly wild coastal anchorages in the Gulf of Riga — a pristine white sand beach backed directly by ancient pine forest, with no village, no development, and no tourist infrastructure. This stretch of coast between Jūrmala and Engure is part of the protected Engure Nature Park coastal zone, where the dune landscape, pine forest, and shallow Baltic sea create a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty. Anchoring here in settled conditions gives a profound sense of the undeveloped Baltic coast as it existed before the resort development of Jūrmala — just sand, pines, sky, and water. The beach is typically deserted even at the height of summer. The water is clean and shallow, warming quickly in July to provide excellent swimming conditions. The pine forests directly behind the dunes are ancient — some trees are estimated at 200+ years old — and walking through them feels like stepping into a northern wilderness. For sailors with a self-sufficient approach to cruising, Ķesterciems represents one of the hidden gems of the Latvian coast.

Sloka River Approach Anchorage

Lielupes grīva · Lielupe river mouth

Good
Depth 25msand70m alarm
NNW

The Lielupe (Sloka) River mouth anchorage sits at the geographic heart of what makes Jūrmala unique — the river runs parallel to the sea for 15 kilometres, creating the narrow strip of land (rarely more than a kilometre wide) on which the entire resort city is built. Anchoring at the river mouth gives access to this extraordinary inland waterway — the Lielupe is navigable by dinghy or small motor launch for many kilometres inland through pine forest and countryside, providing a peaceful counterpoint to the busy beach scene on the seaward side. The anchorage itself is sheltered from northerly and northwesterly winds with good sand and mud holding. The bird life along the Lielupe is excellent — herons, kingfishers, and in season, osprey — and the combination of river estuary habitat and pine forest creates a diverse ecological transition zone. Jūrmala's famous beach (just 500m north across the peninsula) is accessible on foot from any dinghy landing point on the river, giving the best of both worlds — a peaceful anchorage near the river, with the beach and resort facilities a short walk away.

Pāvilosta Outer Roads

Pāvilosta anchorage · Pāvilosta harbour approach

Fair
Depth 37msand85m alarm
ENE

Pāvilosta is the gateway town to the Latvian West Coast — a small but characterful sailing harbour at the mouth of the Saka River, sheltered by breakwaters and offering one of the better visitor berths on the exposed Latvian western shore. The outer roads provide a staging anchorage for vessels approaching or departing the harbour, or for those drawing more than the harbour's limiting depth. The town of Pāvilosta is dominated by its sailing culture — the Latvian Sailing Association has a strong presence here, and the harbour fills with Baltic sailors in summer. The surrounding landscape of sand dunes, pine forests, and the flat, open Baltic horizon gives the area its characteristic West Coast atmosphere — dramatically different from the sheltered Gulf of Riga. The Rīva river provides a pleasant dinghy excursion inland, and the dune landscape south of town toward Bernāti is extraordinary. Pāvilosta hosts an annual Baltic sailing regatta in summer that draws competitors from across the eastern Baltic.
