About This Anchorage

Anchoring off the beach at Jūrmala's Bulduri district is one of the most memorable experiences in Baltic sailing — the 33-kilometre white sand beach, backed by an extraordinary landscape of wooden Art Nouveau villas set among pine forests, creates a scene unlike anywhere else in northern Europe. Jūrmala (literally 'seaside' in Latvian) has been the Baltic's premier resort destination since the Russian imperial nobility discovered it in the 19th century. The tsars built summer villas here, Russian and Latvian intelligentsia spent their summers writing and composing, and today the historic wooden architecture — declared a protected cultural heritage zone — still lines the pine-shaded streets behind the beach. Bulduri is the westernmost of Jūrmala's main beach districts, slightly quieter than the central Majori area, with excellent sand holding in the shallow bay. The water is clean and warm by July (averaging 18–20°C), and the beach scene in summer is lively but not overwhelming. Landing by dinghy gives access to the villa districts, the famous Jūrmala concert hall (Dzintari concert hall hosts international music festivals in summer), and the pine forest paths that connect the beach districts.

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 70m

In Jūrmala's busy waters and near Riga's commercial port approaches, Baltic wind-driven water level changes and passing vessel wash can drag a poorly set anchor. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously during Latvia's Jun–Aug sailing season.
