About This Anchorage
Mangaļsala is the sandy spit forming the eastern breakwater of the Daugava River mouth — the northern shore of Riga's outer harbour approaches. The anchorage behind the spit offers reasonable shelter from southwesterly winds with good sand and mud holding, making it a useful staging position for vessels waiting for a weather window to enter Riga or for a short stop before continuing east along the Gulf of Riga shore. The spit itself is a long, pine-covered sandbar with a narrow beach — a popular summer destination for Rigans arriving by motor launch. The lighthouse at Mangaļsala (built 1884) stands as a landmark for approaching vessels. The view from the anchorage is dominated by the commercial port activity of Riga — grain terminals, container cranes, and Ro-Ro berths — giving a vivid sense of Latvia's maritime commercial importance. For sailors, the anchorage is primarily a functional stop rather than a destination, although the spit beach is attractive for a swim in calm conditions and the proximity to Riga makes it a useful last anchorage before entering the city's marinas.

In Jūrmala's busy waters and near Riga's commercial port approaches, Baltic wind-driven water level changes and passing vessel wash can drag a poorly set anchor. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously during Latvia's Jun–Aug sailing season.
