Anchorages on the Alentejo Coast
One of Western Europe's most unspoilt coastlines — wild Atlantic beaches, cork oak cliffs, and natural harbours at Sines and Vila Nova de Milfontes. The Nortada, Atlantic swell, and orca risk demand careful planning on every passage.
Alentejo Coast — Three Critical Hazards
- Orca interaction zone: Atlantic coast 36°N–38°N has the highest European orca interaction frequency. If approached: stop engine, lower sails, drift passively. Report to orcas.pt.
- Nortada F4–6: NW trade wind builds from 10:00–12:00 most summer afternoons and dies at sunset. E-facing coves offer best shelter. Plan passages for early morning.
- Atlantic swell on bars: Vila Nova de Milfontes (Mira) and Odeceixe (Seixe) bars are DANGEROUS in 2m+ swell. Assess swell and cross HW ±1.5h only.

Costa Vicentina Natural Park (PNSACV)
From Sines south to Cape St. Vincent is the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park — one of Europe's most pristine protected coastlines. No specific anchoring restrictions apply within the park, but camping outside designated areas, beach fires, and littering are prohibited. Facilities are minimal throughout the park — plan to be fully self-sufficient between Sines and Sagres.
Set Your Anchor Alarm Before You Sleep
On the Alentejo's wild Atlantic coast, the Nortada builds while you sleep and Atlantic groundswell can arrive without warning. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your position through the night and alerts you the moment you begin to drag — giving you time to re-set before you're on the beach.
