50m in the sheltered Spuikom lake — fully protected from all directions. The small size of the lake (80 hectares) means swing room is limited. Anchor away from the sailing school race marks and windsurfer areas. Mud and sand bottom — holding is reliable. Monitor depth carefully as tide drops — minimum 1m at LW.
About This Anchorage
The Spuikom at Bredene is one of the most unusual anchorages on the Belgian coast — a tidal lagoon of 80 hectares that lies completely protected from North Sea swell, just 2nm from Ostend. The lagoon connects to the sea via a sluice (spui, meaning 'sluice') that opens on appropriate tidal stages. It is the only location on the Belgian coast where you can anchor completely sheltered from all wind and wave conditions in open water (not a locked marina). The lake has been a protected nature area (Vlaams Natuurreservaat) since the 1980s. The western shore has a sailing school and club facilities. The Bredene village and sea dike are 500m from the lake. Entry requires careful timing with the sluice keeper — call in advance on VHF 14 or by phone. Draught strictly limited to 1.5m maximum.

Skipper's Tips
- →Contact the sluice keeper at least 2 hours before planned arrival — the sluice opens for approximately 1–2 hours around HW; call VHF 14 or the Vlaamse Hydrografie office
- →The Spuikom is the most sheltered anchorage on the entire Belgian coast — a perfect refuge when North Sea conditions are rough outside
- →Windsurfers use this lake in large numbers in summer — the flat water and reliable sea breeze make it one of Belgium's top windsurfing venues
- →Birdwatching from the boat is excellent — the protected north and east shores have breeding terns, oystercatchers, and avocets
- →From the Spuikom, Ostend city centre is 20 minutes by bicycle (rental available at sailing club)
