55m for marina berth. Well-sheltered from SE trades but some W/NW exposure. 55m appropriate — tighten to 40m in settled conditions. Marina is generally calmer than the Papeete roadstead anchorage.

About This Anchorage

Marina Taina lies on Tahiti's west (leeward) coast in the Punaauia area, approximately 5nm southwest of Papeete. It is a full-service marina with haul-out facilities, a well-equipped chandlery, repair workshops, a swimming pool, restaurant, and nearby supermarkets. Many cruisers prefer Taina to Papeete for extended stays — it is quieter, has better repair facilities, and is somewhat sheltered from the constant traffic of the Papeete roadstead. The marina can handle vessels to 60m LOA. The reef and lagoon to the west provide moderate protection. A taxi or bus into Papeete takes 20–30 minutes. The neighbourhood of Punaauia has good local supermarkets and restaurants.

Hazards

  • !W/NW exposure — during passages of western weather systems the marina becomes rolly; check forecasts
  • !Coral reef entrance — follow the marked channel; coral bommies on either side; enter in good light only
  • !Heavy marine traffic from Papeete — ferry wakes reach the marina entrance
  • !Cyclone season November–April — the marina is not a certified cyclone refuge

Skipper's Tips

  • Book berths in advance during peak season (July–October) — the marina fills quickly with long-term cruisers
  • The chandlery and boatyard at Taina are the best in French Polynesia — plan any maintenance or repairs here before heading to remote atolls
  • Le Lotus restaurant at the marina is popular with ex-pats and cruisers — good French-Polynesian cuisine
  • Bus service (le truck) runs from Punaauia to Papeete regularly — cheap and easy way to reach the market and Carrefour
  • Taina is the last full-service marina before the Tuamotus — complete all provisioning and repairs here
