About This Anchorage
Glücksburg's Wasserschloss (Water Castle, 1587) is one of the finest Renaissance castles in northern Europe — the ancestral home of the royal houses of Denmark, Greece, and the United Kingdom (Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was a Glücksburg by birth). The castle sits on an artificial island in a freshwater lake directly behind the anchorage, its distinctive whitewashed towers reflecting in the still water — a famous Danish-German landmark. The town of Glücksburg is a quiet Baltic resort with excellent swimming beaches, a pleasant old town, and direct access to the castle grounds. The anchorage in the bay is one of the most scenic on the entire Flensburg Fjord, with the castle visible from the cockpit. The upper Flensburg Förde narrows here — the German-Danish border is 2nm further north.
