75m in the inner harbour basin. Otranto is primarily a marina/harbour stop rather than an open anchorage. The harbour is the traditional departure point for Albania and Greece by sea — the Strait of Otranto (OTN) separating Italy and Albania is 70nm wide at its narrowest. Monitor Ch 16 for shipping — ferries from Brindisi, Otranto, and Bari to Greece and Albania pass nearby.

About This Anchorage

Otranto is Italy's easternmost city and the gateway to the Adriatic — the town occupies a natural harbour at the S end of the Salento peninsula facing Albania (70nm E). The Byzantine-Norman Cathedral (11th–12th century) contains one of the most remarkable medieval masterpieces in Europe: the entire Cathedral floor is covered by a mosaic Tree of Life (1163–1165 AD) incorporating biblical scenes, mythological figures, Alexander the Great, King Arthur, and the zodiac — created by the monk Pantaleone. The castle of Otranto (1485) was the inspiration for Horace Walpole's Gothic novel 'The Castle of Otranto'. The city fell to Ottoman forces in 1480 — the 800 martyrs are commemorated in the cathedral.

Hazards

  • !Bora from NE: The Strait of Otranto can have dramatic seas in Bora — waves regularly reach 3–4m in sustained Bora; the harbour entrance faces NE and can be dangerous in severe Bora
  • !International ferry traffic: Heavy ferry traffic (Italy–Greece, Italy–Albania) passes through the Strait of Otranto; maintain VHF watch on Ch 16 and give way to ferries
  • !Scirocco from SE: Pushes directly into the harbour entrance from the Ionian; combined Scirocco sea state and Bora rebound can create dangerous confused seas at the strait
  • !Customs/border: Otranto is an EU border port — vessels departing for Albania (non-EU) must complete formalities; arriving from Albania, fly Q flag and complete arrival formalities

Skipper's Tips

  • The Cathedral mosaic floor (Tree of Life) is not to be missed — visit in the morning when the low light through the E windows illuminates the colours; the full tour of the building including the crypt (early Christian mosaics) takes 1.5 hours
  • For Greece/Albania crossings: the Italian Border Police (Guardia di Finanza) office in Otranto handles departure formalities; file the crew list and voyage plan 2 hours before departure
  • The cliff coast S of Otranto toward Capo d'Otranto has spectacular sea caves accessible by dinghy in calm conditions — the Grotta della Monaca (NW of the cape) is particularly fine
  • The WWI and WWII history of the Strait of Otranto is extraordinary — Austrian submarines, Italian mine barrages, Allied convoys all passed here; the Otranto Naval Museum has good exhibits
