Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

65m

65m on sand in 2–4m. Sand holding is consistent in westerly conditions but the east-facing bay means any E or NE wind brings unimpeded Baltic swell. Leave immediately if wind forecast to go east — the bay offers no protection whatsoever from the Baltic.

About This Anchorage

Ljugarn is a small resort village on Gotland's east coast, famous for its sandy beaches, shallow clear water, and the nearby Tomase raukar limestone stacks (Gotland's third-largest raukar field). The anchorage off the sandy beach is perfect in summer W and SW conditions — the clearest water on Gotland for swimming and the warmest east-coast beach on the island. The small harbour has a gästhamn and a few provisions available. Ljugarn is a quieter alternative to Visby for exploring Gotland's landscape, and the raukar walk from the village takes only 45 minutes return.

  • !Raukar limestone formations close to shore create underwater navigation hazard near beach edges

Skipper's Tips

  • Warmest swimming water on Gotland's east coast — Baltic surface water reaches 20–22°C in July
  • Walk to Tomase raukar (45 min return from harbour) — third-largest raukar field on Gotland
  • The beach north of the anchorage has a classic Swedish sommarstuga (summer cottage) landscape
  • Ljugarn makes a good overnight before or after the passage around Gotland's south tip
  • East-facing position means beautiful sunrise from the anchorage — set your alarm
