Depth

24m

Bottom

mud

Alarm Radius

55m

Holding

Excellent

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

55m

55m is generous for this fully enclosed anchorage — the mud holding and all-round shelter mean the boat barely swings. Can reduce to 40m in flat calm. The narrow sound limits swing room — be aware of other vessels anchored nearby in high season.

About This Anchorage

Svendborg Sound is the main waterway of the South Funen Archipelago, and the stretch at Vindebyøre (north of Thurø island, 2nm from Svendborg town) is the premier storm anchorage and overnight stop in the region. Completely enclosed by land, it offers shelter from every direction on thick mud with excellent holding. The setting is beautiful — wooded shores of Thurø to the south, the rooftops of Svendborg visible to the north. Depth 2–4m throughout the anchorable area. The eelgrass fringe on the Thurø shore must be avoided — anchor in the central channel only. No facilities at the anchorage itself, but Svendborg is a short dinghy ride away with full provisioning.

Skipper's Tips

  • One of the best storm anchorages in the archipelago — if weather deteriorates anywhere in the South Funen area, Svendborg Sound is the go-to refuge
  • Anchor in 2.5–3m in the centre of the sound, bearing 180° from the Svendborg church spire
  • Dinghy to Svendborg Havn (2nm north) for provisioning — the harbour town has excellent chandleries, supermarkets, and restaurants
  • Thurø island is worth exploring on foot — cycle hire available in Svendborg
