Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

50m

50m is generous for this completely enclosed bay in 2–3m of mud. The boat will barely swing. Can reduce to 35m in calm conditions. Maximum priority: do not anchor on eelgrass rim — stay in the central muddy pool. The narrow entrance (minimum 2.0m) limits larger vessels.

About This Anchorage

Thurø Bund is the ultimate storm hole in the South Funen Archipelago — a small, almost perfectly circular bay completely enclosed by the shores of Thurø island, offering absolute shelter from every wind direction. The bay is accessed through the narrow Thurø Sund from the south (minimum depth 2.0m — tide can affect, use DA 198). Inside, the water is glassy even in storm conditions outside. Depths are 2–3m over thick dark mud — holding is as good as it gets. The setting is serene: wooded shores, farmland, and the sound of birds rather than waves. No facilities whatsoever — this is a natural anchorage only. The town of Svendborg (excellent facilities) is 3nm by water. Eelgrass beds ring the bay edges — absolutely do not anchor on them.

  • !Very small bay — limited space; maximum 8–10 yachts; in summer weekends can be full
  • !Mud can be foul-smelling when disturbed — normal for sheltered mudflat bays; anchor fouls easily on retrieval
  • !No facilities — fully self-sufficient needed

Skipper's Tips

  • The premium storm anchorage for Svendborg Sound — if a gale is forecast from any direction, Thurø Bund will be calm
  • Approach via Thurø Sund from south: follow the buoyed channel carefully; minimum depth 2.0m at chart datum
  • Bring a mud-washing bucket and hose — the anchor will come up covered in black mud; perfectly normal
  • The wooded shore of Thurø island is a pleasant walk — dinghy ashore to the small beach
  • Combine with Vindebyøre (Svendborg Sound) anchorage for a 2-night Svendborg area cruise

Year-round storm anchorage — usable even in October/November in settled spells. The bay is ice-free in most winters. Excellent for late-season sailing when the rest of the archipelago is too exposed.
