About This Anchorage

Valras-Plage is a small beach resort at the mouth of the Aude River — the same river that flows through Narbonne and is connected via a side canal to the Canal du Midi system. The beach anchorage on clean sand is a fair-weather stop between Cap d'Agde and Gruissan, with the appeal of a genuinely local (non-tourist-resort) beach town. The Aude River mouth area gives partial shelter and the holding on clean beach sand is reliable in calm conditions. Béziers, 15km inland on the Orb River, is a major Languedoc city worth visiting for its cathedral and bull-running festival (Feria de Béziers, mid-August).

Setting Your Anchor

  • 1.DONIA app first: Before dropping anchor anywhere on the Gulf of Lion coast, open the DONIA app and verify no Posidonia meadows are present at your intended spot. Anchoring on Posidonia carries fines of up to €150,000 — no exceptions.
  • 2.7:1 scope minimum: The Gulf of Lion demands maximum holding. Use at least 7:1 scope (chain length to depth) at Valras-Plage. On sandy bottoms, reverse slowly to set the anchor firmly before trusting it.
  • 3.Mistral escape plan: Before anchoring, identify your nearest marina or lagoon refuge and confirm you can reach it in deteriorating conditions. The Mistral can accelerate from 0 to 50kt in under 2 hours. Always have a plan before the anchor is down.
  • 4.Set your anchor alarm to 90m immediately after anchoring. On this coast, you must know the moment your boat moves.

  • A quiet alternative to the busy resort anchorages — genuinely local beach town, very few foreign tourists.
  • The Feria de Béziers (mid-August) is one of the great festivals of the Languedoc — if you coincide with it, anchor here and go inland.
