About This Anchorage

Pointe du Bout is the principal charter sailing hub on Martinique's western coast — home to a well-equipped marina, major charter company bases, fuel dock, chandlery, and a frequent ferry connection to Fort-de-France city. The marina sits at the tip of the Trois-Îlets peninsula, providing excellent infrastructure for visiting cruisers in need of fuel, water, provisioning, and repairs. The outer anchorage east of the marina offers a usable alternative to the busy marina berths, with good access by dinghy to all facilities. The Hotel Bakoua and surrounding resort area creates a pleasant waterfront environment. The ferry dock sees constant traffic from the regular vedette service crossing to Fort-de-France — a 15-minute crossing that makes visiting the capital straightforward without moving the boat. Several restaurants and bars in the marina complex cater to the charter sailing community.

Restrictions: Do not anchor in marina approach channel; respect charter boat traffic; ferry approach channel clear at all times; speed limit 3 knots in marina zone.

Hazards

  • !Very heavy charter boat traffic — vessels departing and arriving throughout the day; maintain vigilant watch
  • !Ferry wake — vedettes create significant wash in the outer anchorage area
  • !Marina approach channel — do not anchor in the marked channel
  • !Peak season crowding — outer anchorage fills with overflow from the marina; arrive early

Skipper's Tips

  • Call the capitainerie on VHF 9 in advance to check berth availability — the marina can accommodate visiting yachts if space permits
  • The ferry to Fort-de-France from the pontoon costs €6.50 round trip and takes 15 minutes — use it for major provisioning runs
  • Ship chandlery at Point du Bout stocks most common spares — plan any maintenance stops here before heading south
  • The outer anchorage at Anse Mitan (0.3nm west) is quieter with the same ferry access if this area is too crowded
  • Diesel barge may be available in season — check with capitainerie; otherwise fuel dock inside marina
