About This Anchorage
Crișan is the main service hub for the central Danube Delta, positioned at the junction of the Sulina Channel and the canal system connecting to the Sfântu Gheorghe arm. This makes it the natural base for exploring the delta's interior waterways. The village has developed modest but functional tourist infrastructure — guesthouses run by local Lipovan families, fish restaurants, and rental rowboats for exploring secondary channels inaccessible to larger vessels. The delta landscape around Crișan is extraordinary: willows overhanging the water, reed beds stretching to the horizon, white pelicans gliding overhead, and the silence of a landscape that has remained essentially unchanged for thousands of years. The Crișan Canal south leads into the most pristine interior of the delta — narrow channels through reeds, ox-bow lakes, and floating reed islands (plaur) that drift with the current.
