Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m

60m for mud/sand in 2–4m. The SW and W exposure is the dominant concern — monitor weather carefully. In settled E or NE conditions, the anchorage is very comfortable. The mud component of the bottom gives better holding than pure sand.

About This Anchorage

Mollösund is one of the oldest and most perfectly preserved fishing villages on Orust, Sweden's third-largest island. The tight cluster of traditional red and yellow wooden houses clinging to the granite shore has changed little in appearance since the 19th-century herring boom. The village is a protected historic environment (riksintresse) and has no modern infill development. Mollösund is quieter and more authentic than Marstrand or Smögen and is popular with experienced Bohuslän sailors who return year after year. The harbour has a small gästhamn, a cafe, and basic provisions. The surrounding coast of Orust offers excellent inner-channel sailing protected from the open Kattegat.

Skipper's Tips

  • One of the most beautiful and authentic fishing villages in Bohuslän — less visited than Smögen or Marstrand
  • The village protected-environment status means it looks exactly as it did a century ago — remarkable
  • Combine with Gullholmen (2nm) for a day tour of the historic outer-coast villages
  • Dinghy exploration of the inner Orust channels to the east — flat calm in any westerly
  • The small village bakery opens early in summer — worth the dinghy ride
