About This Anchorage

Barösund is a classic inner archipelago sound anchorage — a narrow passage between granite islands that provides natural shelter from most wind directions through the geometry of the land itself. The sound creates a funnel that limits fetch and wave development regardless of the wind direction. It is one of the most commonly used overnight anchorages on the route between Tammisaari and the Helsinki archipelago, popular with Finnish cruising sailors for its easy access, reliable holding, and quiet character. The granite shores lined with pine forest give the typical Finnish archipelago atmosphere, and the summer evenings here — with the sound glowing in the long Nordic twilight — are exceptional.

Skipper's Tips

  • Barösund is a popular Finnish sailing landmark — arrive early in July for the best anchoring spots
  • The sound's narrow geometry creates fascinating tidal-like current effects from wind-driven water movement
  • Excellent swimming from the granite shores — the Baltic water here is warm enough in July–August (18–20°C)
  • Walk the granite ridges above the sound for panoramic views over the inner archipelago
