About This Anchorage

Svaneke is frequently voted the most beautiful small town in Denmark — a perfectly preserved 18th-century fishing village with a historic windmill, colourful harbour houses, cobblestone streets, and the best craft brewery in Denmark (Svaneke Bryghus, established 1997). The east coast harbour is the best shelter on this side of Bornholm for SW–W winds. The anchorage south of the harbour entrance is on clean Baltic sand in 3–6m — excellent for swimming and snorkelling in crystal Baltic water. The surrounding rocky coastline is classic Bornholm granite. The preserved post windmill (Svaneke Mølle, 1877) is visible from the anchorage. The town centre has good provisioning, restaurants, and the celebrated brewery/distillery.

Hazards

• !Open to east and SE across Baltic — leave in E conditions; Baltic swell can develop quickly
• !Granite rocks on approach headlands — stay in buoyed channel
• !East coast exposure: if Baltic high pressure brings E wind, anchorage becomes untenable; plan escape route to Rønne (30nm south)
• !Harbour fills in July–August — arrive by midday
• !Bornholm coastal traffic and ferries to Christiansø — monitor AIS

• →Svaneke Bryghus tour and tasting is a highlight — book in advance; the Bornholm IPA and smoked porter are exceptional
• →The historic windmill (Svaneke Mølle) is the best-preserved post windmill in Denmark — free to visit, grounds open year-round
• →Swim from the boat or dinghy to the rocky granite ledges north of the harbour — crystal Baltic water, visibility 5–8m, occasional sea trout
• →The Glasmagerne (glassblowers) workshop in town produces traditional Bornholm art glass — worth visiting even if not buying
• →From Svaneke, the passage to Christiansø (Ertholmene, 18nm NE) is a 3–4 hour sail in moderate conditions — plan weather window
