About This Location
Calanque de Sormiou is one of the most accessible and widest of the Marseille calanques — a spectacular inlet with turquoise water, white limestone walls, and a small village of traditional fishing cottages (cabanons) at the head. The high cliffs give outstanding Mistral shelter. The famous Cosquer Cave (discovered 1991, decorated 27,000 years ago) is located in a submerged cliff passage just E of the bay — the prehistoric art has been recreated in a museum in Marseille. Fishing cabanons cannot be rented but the scene is picturesque.
