About This Anchorage
Mangalia is the southernmost port on the Romanian Black Sea coast, roughly 45km south of Constanța. The modern port sits atop the ancient Greek colony of Callatis, founded in the 6th century BC — the Callatis Archaeological Museum in the town centre displays finds from the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Mangalia was also the site of the Damen Mangalia shipyard (formerly known as the Daewoo Mangalia shipyard), one of Romania's main vessel construction facilities. For visiting sailors, Mangalia's harbour provides one of the more sheltered anchorages on the central Romanian coast — the breakwaters give reasonable protection from northerly and westerly conditions, making it viable even when open coastal anchorages are uncomfortable. Fuel is available, and the town offers full provisioning. Mangalia makes a good overnight stop before the final approach to the Bulgarian border and beyond.
